Foundation Building

What is Foundation Building?

Just like when building a home, the builder must provide a strong foundation for the house to sit on.  The house is only as strong as the foundation.

This is also true for a child.  They must have a strong foundation in order to be ready to learn and for them to want to learn.

What creates a strong foundation for learners?

Children must know that they:

1) Are Safe and Secure

Children need to feel safe and secure before they are ready to learn.  They need to know that they are loved, wanted, appreciated, valued, and have a sense of belonging.

2) Have Autonomy

Allowing a child to have some control over their lives...building choice making skills leads to ownership and independence skills

3) Are In a Strong Relationship with an Adult Who Cares

MOST IMPORTANT:   Building a strong relationship with a trusted adult who cares and takes an active role in their lives such as the parent(s), teacher, extended family members or an adult who can be a role model for them helps the child know they are wanted, loved, and valued which creates a strong sense of belonging for the child.

And 4) Are Able to Grow an Open Mindset

Our thoughts help us to decide if we are capable of  doing a task.
