Hello and welcome! I am Lynn Sykora Milsho! Creator, chief writer, and the main parent guide and advocate here at Empowering Parents of Unique Children owned by Sykora Educational Consultants.
As a mom to three unique adults, two who had IEP’s during their years of education and grammy to (soon to be) 5 grandchildren, and a teacher of 39 years for children with special needs; I know firsthand how exhausting, frustrating and yet exhilarating it is to be a parent and educator to a child who learns, thinks and acts differently; whom I call the unique child.
I hold a Masters Degree in Special Education/Learning Disabilities and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Special Education/ now called Intellectual Impaired. I am licensed to teach children with Special Needs from Kindergarten to High School who have been identified with a specific Learning Disability, Intellectual Impaired, Orthopedically Impaired, and Other Health Impaired.
I am a National Board Certified Special Education Advocate from NASET. And I am certified as a Parent Coach for Positive Parenting.
I grew up in Michigan in the days before computers. I've lived in the Midwest for most of my life, except for four years in North Carolina. I raised my children as a married working mother, a married stay-at-home mother, and a single working mother after my husband passed away when our youngest was 7.
I love spending time with my family and friends, and I also enjoy traveling. I recently went to Europe with a friend, and since 2000, I've been fortunate to travel to Europe, Asia, and many states in the US.
I'm also an avid gardener and am currently the secretary of my local garden club. I enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction books, and I'm a lifelong learner who loves to research new topics.
I'm on a mission to help parents and educators see their unique children's potential and strengths. I believe that every child has something special to offer the world, and I want to help families and educators provide the tools and support that children need to thrive.
I offer a variety of resources and programs to help families and educators, including:

I began teaching children with special needs in the mid-1970s before having my three children. After 39 years of teaching, I retired in the early summer of 2017. With a life license to teach K-12 children with various disabilities, I taught in self-contained cross-cat classrooms for K-6 students with different disabilities in my early years. I also taught children with severe intellectual impairment for two years and elementary children with learning disabilities in a resource classroom setting for 3 years. In my last 25 years of teaching, I worked as a Special Education Consultant for a Special Education Co-op for four school systems. My students, ranging from pre-school to high school, were diagnosed with orthopedic impairment and/or severe health impairment.
"The Empowering Foundation” group of pages is a great resource for parents of unique children. You'll find useful strategies, videos, and blog posts that will help you support your child's success. I'm also continuously adding new printables to the free resource page, so be sure to check back often!"
I am creating a series of teaching videos and writing a book to help parents instill success skills and learn how to energize their unique children’s inner-zeal (motivation). The videos and book will cover skills such as organization, time management, and problem solving, as well as how to nurture unique children's natural curiosity and motivation. The goal is to help parents raise children who are confident, capable, and successful individuals.
Sykora Educational Consultants is dedicated to helping families and educators create supportive relationships and foster connections with individuals who learn, think, and act differently. We believe that everyone deserves to feel valued and belong to a caring community.
Our teaching technique interweaves success-building skills with inner-zeal strategies to help families of unique children build confidence by defining their strengths. This will foster growth and help them discover their authentic selves.
We are committed to providing high-quality services that are tailored to the individual needs of each family. We believe that every child has the potential to succeed, and we are here to help them reach their full potential.
If you are looking for support for your unique child, please contact Sykora Educational Consultants today. We would be happy to discuss your child's needs and how we can help.
